The Criminal Map Is Being Redrawn: Three New Cartels Emerge

Mexico’s criminal landscape is undergoing significant changes, with at least three new cartels emerging in the country. These groups are vying for control of illicit activities, including drug sales, extortion, and kidnapping.

One of these cartels is Gente Nueva Generación (GNG), also known as Gente Nueva Guerrerense. It was formed through an alliance between Los Rodríguez, a splinter group from La Familia Michoacana, and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Their goal is to recover lost territories in Guerrero, particularly in the Costa Chica region controlled by Salvador Granados Vargas, leader of Los Granados.

Reports indicate that GNG received support from CJNG, which provided them with weapons, tactical equipment, and personnel from Central America. On October 24, GNG carried out a failed armed incursion in Tecpan de Galeana, Guerrero, resulting in 16 casualties and 11 arrests.

Federal authorities are investigating the incident and believe that members of GNG were planning to attack another town near Tecpan controlled by Los Granados. When they encountered federal forces, they had no choice but to confront them.

In recent days, the Navy arrested eight members of GNG in a town in Coyuca de Benítez during a ground operation that did not result in a confrontation with the group.

Michoacán New Generation Cartel

The union between CJNG and Los Viagras has given rise to the Michoacán New Generation Cartel. This alliance aims to confront the strongholds of Los Templarios in Apatzingán and the El Abuelo Cartel, led by Juan José Farías Álvarez, based in Tepalcatepec.

The cartel has sent messages asking for a vote of confidence from the population of Aguililla, the hometown of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, leader of CJNG. They announced a cleanup operation targeting their rivals and claimed to be present in 80% of Michoacán.

Federal authorities are focusing on dismantling the leadership of Los Viagras, including Nicolás Sierra Santana, El Gordo; César Sepúlveda Arellano, El Boto; Heladio Cisneros, La Sirena; and José Enereo Yáñez Pacheco, Mono Verde. They are also targeting the leaders of Los Templarios in Apatzingán and El Abuelo.

Tabasco Nueva Generación Cartel

The internal fracture of La Barredora has led to the emergence of several criminal groups in Tabasco that have allied themselves with CJNG. The Tabasco Nueva Generación Cartel is fighting for control of illicit activities with other organizations in various municipalities in the state.

A video released by members of the cartel on social media promised to target their rivals. According to federal authorities, La Barredora, CJNG, the Cartel del Noreste, and Los Panteras are competing for control of drug trafficking, fuel theft, kidnapping, and extortion.

Tabasco is a strategic state for the transit of migrants and the transfer of drugs from South America. The struggle between branches of CJNG and Los Zetas has led to increased violence in the capital, Villahermosa, with shootings, burned vehicles, and assaults.

The municipalities with the highest incidence of intentional homicide, vehicle theft, and drug dealing are Cárdenas, Huimanguillo, Centro, and Comalcalco. Elements from Sedena have been deployed in Tabasco to contain the wave of violence.

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has stated that her government will not negotiate with criminals, as proposed by Morena deputy Manuel Espino.
