WestJet reactivates direct route between Toronto and Cozumel for the 2024-2025 winter season

WestJet has reactivated its direct route between Toronto and Cozumel Island for the 2024-2025 winter season. This comes as a Boeing 737-700 aircraft from Toronto arrived at Cozumel International Airport on Saturday, bringing 132 passengers with it.

The airline will operate weekly flights to Cozumel every Saturday until April 26, 2025, said José Luis Chacón Méndez, the municipal president of Cozumel. He expressed his enthusiasm for the increased air connectivity between the island and other destinations, which he believes will attract more visitors to the area.

According to Chacón, WestJet has increased the frequency of its flights in coordination with the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council (CPTQ). The efforts are part of a broader agreement called “Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo” that aims to promote tourism in Cozumel and ensure that local communities benefit directly from the economic activity generated by tourism.

To further strengthen Canadian tourism, WestJet will introduce a second weekly flight every Thursday starting December 19, 2024, and running until April 17, 2025. This move is expected to consolidate the connection between Toronto and Cozumel, ultimately boosting local businesses and generating more economic benefits.

Cozumel’s mayor emphasized that these efforts are part of a strategy to attract a larger number of Canadian tourists to the island. After the United States, Canada is one of the main sources of visitors for Cozumel. The expansion of flights will be crucial in strengthening the local economy and enhancing the hotel offer and tourist services.

WestJet has maintained a strong relationship with Cozumel Island in previous seasons. Last year, it operated flights between April and May, while previously, from November 2023 to April 2024, WestJet ran two weekly flights during peak holiday periods, solidifying its position as one of the major airlines connecting Toronto to Cozumel.

As part of the WestJet Group, this Canadian low-cost airline operates a fleet of 150 aircraft, mostly Boeing 737 MAX. Its extensive network includes cities in Canada, the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Europe, making it one of the largest airlines in Canada after Air Canada.
