The State Government published this afternoon in the State’s Official Gazette a decree creating the Sierra El Cuale State Hydrological Protection Area. The protection as a state protected natural area will impact 81,887 hectares that include the municipalities of Cabo Corrientes, Mascota, Puerto Vallarta and Talpa de Allende.
This region is of great environmental value; 1,858 species of plants, 72 species of mammals, 314 species of birds and 111 species of amphibians and reptiles have been registered.
Of the almost 82,000 hectares protected, half will be a restricted use sub-zone and the other half a buffer area with sustainable use of natural resources.
The Program for the management and conservation of the Sierra El Cuale State Hydrological Protection Area was also published in the State’s Official Gazette.
The area has been threatened by different activities, mainly tourism, agriculture and real estate developments, in addition to extractive industries such as mining.
