The decision to lift the travel alert for Canadian citizens traveling to Mazatlán, which was issued due to recent violent events in Sinaloa, rests with Ottawa and the Canadian Embassy in Mexico. However, efforts are already underway, according to Wendy Hardouin, the Canadian Consul in Mazatlán.
“We are working on it, we are already there. It is not my business; it is a direct matter for Ottawa and the Canadian Embassy in Mexico City,” Hardouin stated briefly before meeting privately with Mayor Estrella Palacios Domínguez and Celia Jauregui, the director of the Secretariat of Economic Development, Tourism, and Fisheries of Mazatlán.
On Tuesday morning, Hardouin mentioned that she does not know if there have been any cancellations of trips by Canadians to Mazatlán, as this is managed directly by tour operators.
Although she is not authorized to speak to the press, Hardouin reiterated that the decision to lift the travel alert depends directly on the Government of Canada and its Embassy in Mexico. She also noted that Mazatlán is currently calm in terms of security.
“Right now, it is calm. I don’t see anything concerning at the moment. Let’s wait and see, but I can’t say anything else right now,” she said. “I don’t make recommendations on whether to travel to Mazatlán or not. I don’t know how many Canadians have arrived, but I have seen a lot of white people.”
Last week, Governor Rubén Rocha Moya stated that the Government of Sinaloa is seeking to have Canada withdraw the travel alert it issued due to the recent violent events in the state
