During a search of the Andrés Quintana Roo Taxi Drivers Union in Cancún, the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) discovered an office that was used as a torture room, as well as narcotics and live cartridges.
The inspection is being carried out as part of the investigation into the murder of José Luis Corral Morales, which occurred on October 25, a member of the union and former advisor and campaign manager for the local deputy of the Labor Party, Rubén Carrillo Buenfil, the group announced in a statement and after the arrest of Salomón Alfonso Muñoz, Mafer, leader of the drivers and Óscar Antonio Solís, member of the board of directors, who were identified as the alleged masterminds of the murder.
The FGE detailed that in the offices of Mafer, doses of alleged drugs and live cartridges of different calibers were found.
The investigations began after the FGE arrested Jonathan Emmanuel N on October 31, as the alleged perpetrator of the kidnapping and subsequent murder of Corral Morales, and of two more murders of taxi drivers, committed on September 12.
Rubén Carrillo, who had been in charge of the Cancun taxi drivers for about 10 months, resigned from his position at the beginning of October, after a series of complaints from members, who even blocked the entrance to the union, in protest because the representative was not working on the request for an increase in rates before the competent authorities, in addition to allowing the free operation of drivers of digital platforms, such as Uber.
Likewise, the FGE confirmed the existence of the torture room, even pointing out that some members of the union said they noticed these acts.
During the search, the agents seized various computer equipment, hard drives, USB drives, cell phones and video storage equipment, among other evidence.
At the end of the action, the FGE placed seals of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Combating the Crime of Homicide on the doors of the building, under file number 971/2024, so the facilities were secured.
In the statement, the taxi drivers’ group assured that it will collaborate in everything necessary so that these actions are carried out in a transparent manner and, as soon as possible, they can carry out their work and services in their facilities.
“It is important to emphasize that the union is not defined by a single person; we are each and every one of the members who work together for the benefit of our union,”
Meanwhile, taxi drivers warned that the closure of the offices affects them greatly because they cannot check and in case of an accident the insurance will not respond.
The operation involved elements of the Investigation Police of the FGE of Quintana Roo, the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, the Secretariat of the Navy, the Secretariat of National Defense, the National Guard and the Secretariat of Citizen Security of Quintana Roo.
From Chetumal, before entering the session, the deputy and former general secretary of the union, Rubén Carrillo Buenfil, commented: “these are events that occur in the city and that we regret very much,” in relation to the death of members of the union and the arrest of Mafer.
He maintained that it is a matter that should be left in the hands of the authorities of the prosecutor’s office, in order to be able to carry out the investigations one hundred percent.
He added that so far he has not been called to testify regarding the events within the union and considered that the search and seizure of union facilities are matters in the hands of the prosecutor’s office.
