A very difficult time: souvenir sellers in Mazatlán suffer from the lack of tourism

For sellers of souvenirs, beach items and representative objects of the port of Mazatlán, the lack of national and international tourism has caused negative consequences in their businesses, since in the last two months sales have been reduced considerably.

In an interview with Línea Directa, vendors of the Suárez municipal market dedicated to the sale of tourist items assured that the influx of tourists is very scarce, a fact that is detrimental to their economy, since without sales they are unable to cover basic expenses such as rent, transportation, food and bring some profit to support their families.

“The truth is that sales have been very low, very few people have been seen, and the few people who come hardly buy. Because of the lack of tourism, they have dropped a lot. I think they have dropped more than 80 percent,” said Osiris Ávila.

“Sales have been quiet, for three months now, sales have dropped, but suddenly on weekends they pick up a little and sales have risen a little,” said Jesús Antonio Lizárraga Ramírez.

“We have gone through a very difficult time due to the problems that have arisen in Sinaloa, but we have faith that everything will be calm, so that at least next month tourism will start to arrive, hopefully everything will change and that things will go well for all of us, because all the locals live off tourism,” said Patricia Velarde Zatarain.

The merchants said they hope that December will be a month of recovery with many sales and profits, since it is the time when many tourists from various states of Mexico, as well as visitors from abroad, come to the port to spend their winter vacations.

They also agreed that they expect the last month of 2024 to be favorable in sales and also in terms of security, since a calm environment without violence in the streets ensures the confidence of tourists to visit Mazatlán with peace of mind.
