Chinese vehicle brands were the “worst” rated among Mexican consumers and with the highest number of problems reported in the operation of the unit. Among the most common failures are: the infotainment system, the powertrain and driving assistance, revealed a JD Power study as of August 2024. According to the Automotive Design and Performance 2024 (APEAL) study, a section of the Vehicle Quality and Reliability Study (VDS) conducted by JD Power Mexico 2024, Chinese and French car brands are the ones that report the highest number of problems for consumers, with 271 and 254 failures per 100 units, respectively, compared to 176 for Italians and 201 for Japan.
Based on a survey of 7,169 consumers of 26 brands and 134 models between 1 and 3 years old, applied from November 2023 to August 2024, the company placed the Chinese brand MG as the worst rated with 807 points in design and performance satisfaction. And in contrast, Toyota is ranked with 907 points as the best rated.
The average for the automotive industry in Mexico was 888, where above this average are brands such as RAM, Ford, Hyundai, KIA, Jeep, Nissan, Mazda, Honda and Toyota (the best rated). Below the average are Chevrolet, FIAT, Mitsubishi, Peugeot, Volkswagen, Dodge, SEAT, Suzuki, Renault, and MG. Gerardo Gómez, general director of J.D. Power of Mexico, explained that “the Chinese brands that are now arriving are experiencing a new market. And they will have to adapt, and as soon as possible they will have greater success with consumers. And those that do not comply, not only the Chinese ones, are going to lose,” he warned.
During the first sales experience of the Chinese brands in Mexico (which includes MG, BYD, Chirey, Geely, JAC, Changan, among others) the highest report of problems is that of the Bluetooth connection, followed by fogged windows, the absence of USB ports and the reverse camera, he pointed out according to the survey.
Satisfaction is down
The general satisfaction of the Mexican consumer regarding the design and performance of the purchased car decreased to 889 points in 2024 compared to the previous year, from 898 points recorded in 2023
J.D Power highlighted that throughout the analyzed period of 2024, 58% of customers had some problem with their vehicle, while in 2023 that figure was 60%, which led to 214 problems being recorded on average per 100 vehicles (PP100).
