The Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SICT) reported that it costs 521 million pesos to carry out the studies to build the Railroad System (or passenger train) from Mexico City to Nogales, which will pass through the State of Mexico, Hidalgo, Querétaro, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Jalisco, Sinaloa and Sonora.

The main problem facing the population living in the Central and Northern Region of Mexico is poor interstate connectivity and mobility due to accelerated population growth and urban expansion, said the agency in charge of Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina.

Today there is insufficient road infrastructure and an obsolete and deficient urban and regional public transportation system, which translates into severe traffic congestion during peak hours on the main communication routes, added the entity in charge of infrastructure works.

Inhabitants of different regions of the country experience a significant increase in the cost of transporting people every day, with long travel times.

The lack of passenger transportation is causing an increase in environmental pollution, accidents, insecurity and social exclusion, which limit productivity, accessibility and direct connectivity to work centers, home, education, health and recreation between regions, explained the SICT.

The studies will determine the technical, economic, legal and environmental feasibility and will analyze its profitability from the socioeconomic point of view of the passenger train from Mexico City to Nogales, assures the agency.

The money to pay for the studies of the Mexico City passenger train was requested from the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) to be sent to the General Directorate of Railway and Multimodal Development.

Also, the General Directorate of Railway and Multimodal Development will be in charge of the market studies of supply and demand, calibration of the model and Analysis of the Release of the Right of Way of the passenger train that will go from Mexico City to the border with the United States.

The construction of the passenger trains was promoted by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and with the arrival of Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo to power, he did everything to expedite its construction.

The president even determined that the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) will be in charge of the construction of passenger trains in Mexico.

The other passenger trains

The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation plans to invest more than 1,000 million dollars in the feasibility studies of the passenger trains that leave Mexico City and arrive in Nuevo Laredo, Pachuca and Naucalpan.

The SICT requested a disbursement of 909 million pesos in 2024 and 2025 to carry out all the pre-investment studies for the preparation of the Cost and Benefit Analysis of the Mexico – Nuevo Laredo Railway System. Market studies of supply and demand, calibration of the model and Analysis of the Release of the Right of Way are contemplated there.

This train will pass through Querétaro, Guanajuato, San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas.

The Pre-investment studies for the AIFA – Pachuca train cost 84 million pesos, while the preparation of the Cost and Benefit Analysis for the Naucalpan – Buenavista Railway System costs 31 million pesos.

The government of Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo intends to develop a project that seeks to take advantage of the existing railway right of way, starting in Pachuca de Soto and ending at the Felipe Ángeles International Airport in Santa Lucia (AIFA).

For its part, the Light Train will pass through the municipality of Naucalpan de Juárez, State of Mexico, as well as the municipalities of Azcapotzalco, Miguel Hidalgo and Cuauhtémoc in Mexico City.

This is an important area that generates trips for the metropolitan area of the Valley of Mexico, and it also has direct connectivity with lines 2, 7 and B of the Collective Transportation System (STC), lines 1, 3 and 4 of the Metrobús and indirectly, Line 4 of the Mexibús and the Extension of the Lechería-AIFA Suburban Train.
