According to the Government of Mexico, an average of 83 intentional homicides were recorded daily in the country during October 2024.
Federal authorities reported on November 12, 2024, that while murders in Mexico show a downward trend, seven states account for 50% of the intentional homicides recorded nationwide.
Daily Murder Rate in Mexico
During a morning press conference at the National Palace, Marcela Figueroa Franco, head of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), highlighted that since 2018, Mexico has seen a downward trend in the number of murders. As of last October, Mexico averaged 83 intentional homicides per day, a decrease of 17.3% per day.
Figueroa Franco noted, “Between 2015 and 2018, there was an upward trend in intentional homicides, but since then, the number of murders has decreased”.
The 7 States with the Most Murders
Despite the overall downward trend, seven states in Mexico concentrate 50% of intentional homicides:
– Guanajuato: 10.3%
– Baja California: 8%
– State of Mexico: 7.6%
– Chihuahua: 6.7%
– Jalisco: 6%
– Guerrero: 5.9%
– Nuevo León: 5.4%
Although not among the states with the highest number of intentional homicides, Sinaloa accounts for 2.6% of the murders. Between January and August 2024, Sinaloa recorded a stable daily average of intentional homicides, ranging from 0.9 to 1.4 per day. However, starting in September, due to conflicts between criminal groups, the number of murders increased to 4.17 in September and 5.7 in October. In the first 11 days of November, the preliminary average was 3.91 intentional homicides per day.
