During the early hours of Wednesday, the 6th, the Republican candidate, Donald Trump, was declared the virtual president of the United States, and with him come fears regarding his statements regarding applying tariffs to goods produced in Mexico and imported to the neighboring nation.
“If they do not stop this onslaught of criminals and drugs that come to our country, I will immediately impose a 25% tariff on everything they send to the United States,” was Trump’s last warning as a candidate in Raleigh, Northern California.
In this sense, one of the private investment projects in Mexican territory that is faltering is the construction of the Tesla Gigafactory in Nuevo León, one of the projects that had the most publicity since the state government of Samuel García Sepúlveda.
For months, the construction of the project has been on hold, mainly due to the uncertainty that existed regarding the election in the United States, as explained by Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, and with the virtual victory of Donald Trump, it is put -even more- in doubt what the future of this and many other investments will be.
“(Donald) Trump has said that he will impose heavy tariffs on vehicles produced in Mexico, so it would not make sense to invest much,” Musk said on July 23 of this year, putting on hold the arrival of the billions of dollars that were planned.
The CEO of Tesla was present at Donald Trump’s campaign events and boosted his image, to the point of having launched a dynamic to promote the vote in favor of the Republican, giving away a million dollars to one of the voters at random.
Samuel García was optimistic about Gigafactory
The governor of the northern state, Samuel García, had been optimistic about the possibility of the project being developed in Monterrey, Nuevo León, because after Elon Musk’s statements in July he denied that they had received any formal notice to stop the construction.
“If at any time the company decides to adjust its work schedule due to circumstances beyond Nuevo León’s control, the state government understands and respects it. As of today, no formal notice has been received from the company,” he stated in a press release.
The councilor also referred to the possibility that the “pause” was related solely to electoral issues.
“I truly believe, firmly, that it is an electoral issue that ends between now and November. Yesterday I even saw an interview with Donald Trump and he congratulated Elon Musk for that truck (cybertruck),” was one of the optimistic statements made by García Sepúlveda in August of this year.
