The Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral is considered the first wonder of Colombia and one of the main tourist attractions in the department of Cundinamarca. It receives its name because it was built on an active structure of this mineral and, in addition to being a religious site of great importance, it pays tribute to the struggle and work of the local communities.
To enter this place of worship —located 180 meters underground in the mountain— it is necessary to cross a corridor that exposes a high relief in honor of the salt miners who were in charge of erecting the enclosure. There, beneath the sculpture, the young Fernando González Núñez, better known as ‘La Flaca’, alleged operator of the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG), posed for one of his last photographs.
A watch with a gold strap, a Dolce & Gabbana jacket, a Cuadra brand bag and a cap in brown and black colors are some of the items that ‘La Flaca’ used on her visit to the Cundinamarca cathedral. The image of his trip was shared by him on his Threads account in mid-July 2024 —although the specific date on which it was taken is unknown—. “Without so much C-H (sic.) stuff” was the text with which Fernando González accompanied his portrait.
Two weeks later, on the same platform, he shared another photograph in which he was shown inside a warehouse full of aircraft in an unspecified location. At least five light aircraft are visible in the material, including one with registration N9122N. This vehicle is an example belonging to the PA-46 Malibu line, from the manufacturer Piper Aircraft, Inc.
By entering the aircraft data into tracking systems, it is possible to find that the last recorded flight of this unit occurred on October 16. According to the log, it departed from David Wayne Hooks Memorial Airport (DWH) in Texas, United States, and arrived at an unrecognized landing zone in the state of Querétaro, Mexico, after almost four hours.
Three weeks after the plane arrived on Mexican soil, ‘La Flaca’ was tracked down and killed by alleged members of the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel (CSRL).
Thanks to photographs that he himself shared on social media, his rivals learned that on November 9 he was at the ‘Los Cantaritos’ bar, in the center of Querétaro. Shortly after nine at night, a group of heavily armed individuals arrived at the establishment and fired several bursts of gunfire at the attendees.
The gunmen shot ‘La Flaca’, but in the same episode they killed nine other people and injured at least 13 others. According to federal government investigations, this massacre would be a sign that the CJNG and the CSRL moved the feud they were having in Guanajuato to other states.
