Violence Surges in Campeche: No Relief for Residents

Attacks with firearms, executions, and other crimes continue to claim victims in Campeche. Recently, a man was found dead with signs of torture in Champotón.

Recent Incidents

In addition to the frequent shootings, a lifeless man with signs of torture was discovered on the side of the road between the Lázaro Cárdenas and Felipe Carrillo Puerto ejidos in Champotón. Passersby found the body in the morning and notified the ejido authorities, who then alerted the National Guard. Upon arrival, the National Guard confirmed the man had no vital signs, apparently dying from a brutal beating. The area was cordoned off while Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) personnel collected evidence and transferred the body for further investigation.

In the capital, two other individuals were injured by firearms and taken to various hospitals after being intercepted in the Fidel Velázquez housing unit. The victims were in front of a house on Quintana Roo Street when two subjects on a motorcycle shot them at least three times. The attackers fled towards Benito Juárez Avenue. One victim lay on the ground, while the other ran home to seek help. Security elements quickly arrived, implementing an operation with support from Red Cross paramedics and the Emergency Medical Care System (SAMU). Both victims were reported stable.

Legislative Response

PRI parliamentary coordinator Miguel Ángel Pool Alpuche emphasized the need for security authorities to clarify their approach to handling crimes in the state. Movimiento Ciudadano parliamentary coordinator Pedro Armentía López stated that if a security strategy exists, it has proven inefficient due to the increased presence of crimes and lack of arrests.

Legislators expressed concern over Campeche being classified as one of the states with the greatest increase in insecurity, citing not only extortion but also firearm attacks and alleged cases of torture. They announced plans to urge the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Campeche (Fgecam) and the Secretariat for Citizen Protection and Security (SPSC) to clarify their crime-fighting strategies and respond to citizens’ concerns.
