Xavage Park Temporarily Closes Due to Low Tourist Spending in Cancun

Grupo Xcaret has announced the temporary closure of its Xavage adventure park, located on the Cancun-Puerto Morelos highway, starting November 12. This decision comes in response to a significant drop in tourist spending in the Mexican Caribbean.

Reasons for Closure

According to Grupo Xcaret, average visitor spending has decreased by 17% compared to previous years, affecting the demand for extreme experiences. This measure is part of the group’s strategy to adapt to changes in global tourism, including a lower influx of flights to Cancun and shifting visitor preferences. The closure aims to redesign the Xavage offerings and align with new market expectations. Other parks, such as Xenses, will continue to operate with seasonal adjustments to optimize their operations.

Impact on Employees

The $100 million investment made five years ago has not met expectations, leading to the temporary closure of Xavage and leaving approximately 400 employees in limbo. Grupo Xcaret assures that most employees will be relocated, and those who cannot be relocated will receive support in accordance with labor laws.

Tourism Decline

Traditionally, the months of September, October, and November are the lowest for tourism. However, this year’s decline has been more severe than expected, with Cancun’s occupancy rate dropping to an unexpected 46.6% in week 39 (September 23-29), according to the federal Ministry of Tourism.

Grupo Xcaret reported that tourist spending per visitor decreased by 11.4% in 2023 and an additional 6.3% this year, resulting in an average decrease of 17% over the past two years. Visitor preferences and consumption patterns have also changed.

Future Plans

Grupo Xcaret plans to redesign the Xavage park concept to better meet current market demands. Security personnel continue to monitor the park, and operations are being adjusted to ensure a smooth transition.

Grupo Xcaret noted that 2024 has been a year of conjuncture and stabilization for global tourism. Cancun is expected to end the year with a decrease of three million passengers compared to the previous year, due to 8.3% fewer seats available for arrivals at Cancun Airport and a decline in visitors.

The company remains committed to adapting to these challenges and ensuring the long-term success of its attractions.
