Starlink Launches Backpack for Global Satellite Internet Connectivity

Starlink aims to provide internet access to remote locations worldwide. Initially, it offered a large kit for home installation, but now it caters to travelers and campers. These services are already available to customers in Spain. To support these mobile users, Elon Musk’s company has introduced a new backpack designed to carry the lightest connection equipment anywhere.

Backpack Features

The backpack is designed to hold all the components needed to use the Starlink kit while traveling, including the Gen 3 router, power supply, the standard 5m Starlink cable, and even a 16-inch laptop. This new design is slimmer than the first model, which had to accommodate larger antennas. The brand has been introducing increasingly lighter versions.

SpaceX is selling the new Starlink backpack for $199 in the U.S. The thin backpack can fit “all the components you need to use your Starlink Standard Kit on-the-go, including the Gen 3 router, power supply, provided 5m Standard Starlink Cable, and up to a 16” laptop.

Starlink Mini is the most compact model presented by the company. With DC power, it is approximately the size of a thick laptop and integrates the Wi-Fi router directly inside. Designed to be carried everywhere, it weighs only 1.1 kilograms. It offers speeds greater than 100 Mbps while consuming less energy than its larger counterparts, requiring an average of 20-40W. This means it needs a power source such as a USB-C PD power bank with a minimum wattage of 100W (20V/5A), like an Anker Prime 27,650mAh (99.54Wh).

This kit works with the company’s Roam program, created for its most traveled customers. It allows them to use satellite internet service while on the move instead of at a residential address. It offers 50GB, although it can also be expanded for motorhomes with unlimited service. One of its advantages is that it can be paused to avoid charges when the vacation is over, and you return home.

Starlink Mini is available in Spain for 399 euros, and the Roam plan costs 40 euros per month (72 euros for the unlimited plan), plus management fees. Currently, it is only available to Starlink customers in the United States for $199.

The company continues to expand its services to offer coverage across the globe, from ships to planes. It is even working to enable Starlink satellite connectivity from mobile phones without the need for intermediary antennas.
