Tropical storm “Sara”, near the Yucatan Peninsula, caused flooding of up to one and a half meters in height in Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche.
Among the most affected neighborhoods are El Potrero, Santa Rosalía, Benito Juárez, 23 de Julio and Renovación, according to local media.
Alejandro Montenegro, a resident of Colonia El Playón, indicated that in this area the boats floated into the street due to the flooding.
“Everything from 68th Street to Avenida Periférico Norte is completely flooded. It measures about one and a half meters; in the lower parts of El Playón the water reaches one meter and 20 centimeters,” he said.
The rainfall of between 180 and 190 millimeters fell on the streets, avenues and sidewalks and even caused baby crocodiles to come out into the city.
Through social networks, users shared videos in which private cars and taxis can be seen under water.
On the other hand, the lower parts of the ejidos La Libertad and Nuevo Campeche, in Escárcega, registered flooding that came into contact with grasslands and soil, with muddy parts. Civil Protection began to drain the area with machinery.
Pablo Gutiérrez Lazarus, Municipal President, indicated that the sumps are working at their maximum capacity, so he asked the citizens to stay informed of the information.
“The sumps and pumps do not stop their work. It is important not to throw garbage on the public road,” he asked.
Meanwhile, the municipality canceled two recreational events that were to be held at the Carmen Ecopark due to the forecast of rain.
Likewise, Biby Rabelo, Mayor of Campeche capital, pointed out that the brigades removed the grates from the streets to collect all the garbage that has been dragged to the sewers and to avoid flooding.
For her part, the Governor of the state, the Morena member Layda Sansores, reported that the municipalities of the entire state are on blue alert – of very low danger – due to the proximity of “Sara”.
So far, the tropical storm is located 270 kilometers south-southeast of Puerto Costa Maya, in Quintana Roo, which could cause heavy rains in Chiapas, Campeche and Quintana Roo; as well as very strong rains in Yucatan and Tabasco, reported the National Coordination of Civil Protection.
