Cancun is known as one of the most emblematic tourist destinations in Mexico, however, the drop in hotel occupancy and the decrease in tourist income forced the Xcaret company to close parks and request help.
The decision of the Xcaret Group to pause operations in its parks, Xavage and Xenses Insomnia, has raised concerns in the tourism sector of the Riviera Maya. In this context, Jesús Almaguer Salazar, president of the Association of Hotels of Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres, warned that this situation also extends to other small tourism companies in the region.
Almaguer pointed out that during the first quarter, the Cancun airport registered less than 500 daily air operations, which directly affected hotel occupancy, which remained below 50% in several areas of the Mexican Caribbean. Without a doubt, this crisis in tourism activity also hits jobs and therefore the economy of the region.
Xcaret closes parks in Cancun and asks for help
In the midst of this drop in tourist activity in Cancun, the Cancun Hotel Association has requested support from the Government of Mexico to strengthen the tourism promotion of the region and avoid the implementation of new taxes or restrictions that further aggravate the situation.
Jesús Almaguer Salazar, president of the Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association, said that despite the difficulties they are going through, they are confident that the high season will bring an improvement in the figures, with a projected occupancy of 85%, especially due to the growth of the Canadian market, which now represents 10% of the tourists visiting the area, ranking third after the United States and Mexico.
