The image of law enforcement in Tulum is once again under scrutiny following a complaint by Bersain Sánchez Torres, who claims he was beaten and robbed by State and Municipal Police officers. This incident is part of a troubling pattern of police abuse in the area.
Incident Details
Sánchez Torres reported that the incident occurred after a misunderstanding with his partner, which was resolved at the time. However, officers from patrols 92151 and 9257 allegedly assaulted him brutally, causing severe injuries. He also accuses the police of stealing 1,500 pesos from his vehicle and another 4,000 pesos from his wallet.
Sánchez Torres is demanding that the authorities take action against those responsible. “It is not fair that those who should protect us abuse their power in this way,” he stated.
Pattern of Abuse
This case is not isolated. Tulum has seen multiple complaints of police abuse in recent years. Notably, the case of Victoria Salazar, a Salvadoran woman who died in 2021 after being subdued by municipal police, and recent complaints from workers in the Maya Zone who claim to have been extorted by security elements.
Community Demands
The Tulum community is calling for justice and a thorough purge of the police forces. Citizens are urging authorities to implement exemplary sanctions and ensure that such acts are not repeated, aiming to restore confidence in local security forces.
