Bike couriers: young people transform package delivery in Puebla and Cholula

In a context where traffic has become a constant, a group of young people decided to confront the congestion and respond to the growing demand for fast deliveries. This is how Envici was born, a bicycle-messenger cooperative that travels the streets of Puebla and Las Cholulas with a clear objective: to offer an efficient, economical, environmentally friendly and, above all, community-friendly service.

It is a hot and congested day in Puebla. A group of young people pedal down 7 Oriente, dodging the traffic while transporting a variety of products: from boxes with local goods to small urgent packages. They feel part of a green revolution, where the bicycle is not only a means of transport, but a tool to generate social change in the city.

The bicycle-delivery is, in effect, a messenger service via bicycles, but for the young people behind Envici, this project goes beyond the simple transport of objects. It is an initiative that promotes respect for the environment, encourages local consumption and seeks to build a more supportive community. Every kilometer traveled is not just a service, but a step towards a more sustainable future.

Dulce Evelin Pérez, María Fernanda Cuecuecha, Vania Itzel Herrera, Marco Ramírez Castro, Antonio Ortiz and Adonai Moctezuma shared a day in their lives. Like many young people, their routine is that of someone who seeks to optimize time and resources to the maximum. But for them, each pedal stroke has a clear purpose: to help.

María Fernanda explains that the idea of creating the cooperative arose not only from the need to offer an ecological alternative, but from the love of the bike and the desire to promote a more human business model.

What sets us apart from other platforms such as Uber or Didi is that here you don’t just have an automated service. We are people, and that changes everything. There is real empathy with the client. We know that situations can change, that something can go wrong or that unforeseen events can arise. And we are always willing to look for solutions.

Bike delivery is not an easy task. Although the Envici team has two bicycles adapted for large loads, deliveries require constant effort and being on the move. Efficiency is key, as every minute counts to meet delivery times.

What are Envici’s rates?

The standard service has a starting rate of 5 pesos, 15 pesos per kilometer and a minimum rate of 50 pesos for distances less than or equal to 3 kilometers.

If the delivery is scheduled, the starting rate is 5 pesos, the kilometer costs 13 pesos and the minimum rate is 44 pesos.
For “LAP” (As Soon As Possible) services, the starting rate goes up to 10 pesos, the kilometer costs 20 pesos and the minimum rate is 70 pesos.
Aside from being fast, Envici’s couriers stand out for their ability to adapt. The bicycle, unlike a car, has great flexibility to move through dense traffic and narrow streets. This allows young people to fulfill orders during times of greatest congestion, often faster than motor vehicles.

Every day, deliveries are managed in a practical and simple way through WhatsApp. Customers send their request or schedule shipments days in advance; the team organizes the time and routes to make the work more efficient. This system of direct communication with people, instead of with a machine or Artificial Intelligence, is another of Envici’s great values.

“We have that closeness. There are no intermediaries or automatic bots. We are flexible,” explains Dulce, while checking the messages that arrive. She knows that each delivery that day could be the answer to a local entrepreneur’s need or a customer’s satisfaction.

Competition with large transport platforms can be intimidating, but the conviction of their purpose drives them to continue forward. “The added value is in the human,” they say firmly. At Envici there are no algorithms or automation; Only people committed to what they do, who understand the challenges of the city and seek real solutions to each problem.

One of Envici’s fundamental pillars is the promotion of local consumption. Many of its clients are small businesses found in the Alternative Tianguis of Puebla, cafes, health food stores and food establishments that need fast and reliable deliveries, but that do not have the large budgets of traditional platforms.

In addition to delivering products in the city center, the young people of Envici also help businesses in the Cholulas to reach more people, promoting a supportive and local economy.

What we seek is to create a support network. If we help a local business, we are helping the entire community
explains Marco.

For them, each delivery is an opportunity to strengthen the social and economic fabric of the city. It is not just about delivering something, but doing it in a way that the entire cycle—from the producer to the consumer—is sustainable and fair.

As Envici’s service becomes more established, these young people dream of expanding their horizons. The idea of extending their routes, adding more bicycles, creating alliances with more local businesses and, of course, continuing to promote the use of the bicycle as a tool for change, is still alive.

For now, the pedals do not stop. Between the noise of the city and the hustle and bustle of the streets, they continue to bet on a more human, closer and, above all, greener model. And every time the sun sets and the last delivery is made, the Envici team feels satisfied. Not only for having delivered one more package, but for having left a small positive impact on the community.

A call for respect from motorists
Finally, the Envici team calls on motorists: it is essential that drivers respect cyclists, for the safety of all road users and to promote more sustainable transport. Cyclists are vulnerable users, without the protection offered by a motor vehicle. An accident, even a minor one, can have serious consequences for a cyclist. Road safety therefore depends largely on drivers being aware of and keeping an appropriate distance when overtaking or sharing space on the road.

Respecting cyclists encourages more harmonious coexistence in cities, reduces conflicts on public roads and promotes ecological, economic and healthy transport. By doing so, drivers are not only helping to reduce congestion and pollution, but also contributing to the creation of more sustainable cities.

Mutual respect on the streets is also a matter of road safety education. Good coexistence between motorists, cyclists and pedestrians depends on responsible and respectful behaviour from everyone. If drivers understand the importance of giving up space to cyclists, a culture of respect for life and safe mobility is being cultivated, benefiting the whole of society.
