Passenger train in Sonora: How is this project projected in the state?

The sections corresponding to the Sonora passenger train will be completed between 2027 and 2029, according to the schedule of the National Defense Secretariat (Defense).

During the morning conference at the National Palace, Gustavo Ricardo Vallejo Suárez, commander of the “Felipe Ángeles” Group, announced that in 2027 the construction of Phase 3 will begin, which includes the Mochis-Guaymas and Guaymas-Hermosillo sections.

Both sections will be completed in 2028 with a length of railroad tracks for the first section of 362 kilometers and 135 for the second.

In Phase 4, which will begin in 2028, construction will begin on the Hermosillo-Nogales section with 277 kilometers of railway tracks that will be completed in 2029.

Among other trunk lines, the construction of 3,393 kilometers of passenger railway tracks to the North of the country is being considered,” he said.

The railway line that corresponds to Sonora is Mexico City-Querétaro-Irapuato-Guadalajara-Tepic-Mazatlán-Mochis-Guaymas-Hermosillo-Nogales.

In total, the budget for 2025 includes 157 billion pesos for train projects in the country, explained Andrés Lajous Loaeza, general director of the Railway Transport Regulatory Agency.

Lajous explained that during the first half of 2025, the Ministry of Defense will begin works on the AIFA-Pachuca and Mexico-Querétaro sections.

The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) will tender works on the Querétaro-Irapuato and Saltillo-Nuevo Laredo sections and the first fleet of trains will be tendered.

Preparatory work will also be carried out this year to begin works on the Saltillo-Nuevo Laredo and Querétaro-Irapuato sections.
