Business leaders in Tulum are urging authorities to monitor taxi drivers and police more closely during the winter season, as tourists have reported excessive charges and extortion.
Antonio Paparela, a hotelier, emphasized the importance of clear communication about taxi prices to avoid tourist complaints. He also noted that tourists have reported mistreatment by police, highlighting the need for cooperation between public and private sectors.
Jesús Cruz, a tour seller, shared that both locals and tourists have experienced these abuses, which negatively impacts Tulum’s reputation. He stressed that word-of-mouth publicity is crucial, and negative experiences deter visitors.
Governor Mara Lezama has instructed authorities to enforce the law strictly against drivers involved in violent incidents, whether they are taxi drivers or platform drivers. She has ordered the revocation of concessions and driving licenses for those found guilty of such actions.
