Gun Attacks in Cancun Leave Six Dead

Recent armed attacks in Cancun have highlighted the growing violence affecting this popular tourist destination. In a span of 24 hours, five armed incidents resulted in six deaths and three serious injuries, believed to be linked to clashes between drug trafficking groups.

Series of Attacks

The first incident occurred on Saturday morning at a barbershop, where a man was fatally wounded. Later that evening, four men, including two minors, were killed while drinking outside a house in the Santa Cecilia neighborhood. They were attacked by individuals on motorcycles.

“The first lines of investigation indicate that this event is related to crimes against health in its form of drug dealing,” reported the Attorney General of Quintana Roo.

The Attorney General’s Office has stated that agents are collecting evidence and conducting investigations to find the culprits. During the evidence collection, another attack was reported in Villas Otoch Paraíso, an area known for its high crime rate. An assailant broke into an apartment and shot two men.

Additional Incidents

Around 1:30 in the morning, a bricklayer was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds, including one to the head, in another part of the city. Shortly after, at 6:00 a.m., the body of a man was found in a motorcycle taxi in region 236.

Impact on Tourism

These events reflect the intense wave of violence facing the Mexican Caribbean, a critical area for tourism in Mexico, marked by conflicts between criminal gangs that have also affected foreigners. According to the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, 594 homicides were recorded in Quintana Roo from January to October 2024.
