Is Sonora a safe destination for tourists?

In Sonora, the recent wave of violence and attacks on American travelers is already causing concern and uncertainty in the tourism and hotel sector in areas such as Puerto Peñasco.

What is usually one of the favorite destinations for Arizona vacationers during the December holidays has been affected by insecurity and the presence of armed groups.

“Yes, if they cancel, if they think about it more, it creates insecurity when planning your trip,” explained Héctor Vázquez, businessman of Las Palomas Resort.

According to businessman Héctor Vázquez, more than 60% of the hotel and real estate sector in Puerto Peñasco depends on American tourists, their absence could generate significant impacts on the local economy.

“Not only the investment of Americans, but also that for Peñasco tourism is the main economic activity and many families depend on it,” added Vázquez.

The concern comes from the recent attacks on Americans in the northern region of the state, on November 23 in the municipality of Caborca where two travelers were injured.

Telemundo Arizona spoke exclusively with one of the survivors of the attack, who said that for more than 15 years he traveled from Phoenix to Puerto Peñasco, but on this last occasion he took a longer and more unknown route for him, crossing the border through Nogales.

Local authorities recommend traveling during the day, taking roads that he knows, and monitoring the situation in the places he will pass through. In addition, the State Department maintains its level 3 travel alert for Sonora, asking to reconsider his trip.
