More than a month after the collapse on the Orizaba – Puebla highway, near Las Cumbres de Maltrata, in the area known as El Mirador, there is already a tentative date for the problem to be solved and users of this communication route to be able to cross from the Central region of Veracruz to the state of Puebla.
Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina, head of the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation of the Federal Government, revealed the dates to begin giving way to cargo and private vehicles on the Orizaba – Puebla highway, also known as Acatzingo – Ciudad Mendoza.
From the state of Veracruz, during the visit of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo in the region of the High Mountains of the State, she announced to the media that it will be on January 31, 2025 when the passage to vehicular traffic will be opened in two provisional lanes parallel to the landslide.
Regarding the total vehicular release, and to give a permanent solution to the landslide that occurred on October 25, 2025 due to heavy rains and deforestation in the area, he assured that by the end of April 2025 it is expected to conclude the removal work and clear the road, to restore traffic in its entirety.
Esteva Medina reiterated that in the area of the landslide, work has been done since the first day of the emergency to address this stretch of road, which is one of the main arteries of communication between the state of Veracruz and the center of the country for the transfer of goods.
He assured that in the area, they keep blocked approximately 322,000 cubic meters of land. Currently, there are 26 heavy machines working in the area with 38 workers. According to information provided by the SICT Veracruz Center, work is being carried out every day from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. to expedite the opening times of this provisional passage, which already has a date.
The information updates on the collapse on the Orizaba – Puebla highway were flowing in dribs and drabs. Two weeks after the event, Caminos y Puentes Federales (CAPUFE) through its official accounts, revealed that among the rubble of earth, 6 vehicles – 4 tractor-trailers and 2 cars – were buried.
This Saturday, November 30, the head of the federal SICT reported that 7 units were rescued in the area, of which 3 were pickaxes that transported Diesel, so under protocols and personnel from Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX) the removal of the affected units was achieved without causing a larger incident. According to Esteva Medina, at least two tankers were carrying 60,000 liters of diesel and the third, approximately 30,000 liters.
