The economy of Campeche is in a dire state, continuing to decline each year, according to official data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi). Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has reduced resources for Campeche, cutting 1,170.3 million pesos in participations (14% less) and 522.7 million pesos in federal investment (6.2% less) compared to 2024. Additionally, Pemex has not paid its suppliers, contributing to the economic downturn in Ciudad del Carmen. Overall, the economic outlook for Campeche is bleak, with little hope for improvement. However, one thing has consistently grown since Layda Sansores San Román took office: her salary.
In 2021, when Layda Sansores assumed office, the governor’s gross monthly salary was 142,928.98 pesos. By 2025, it will increase to 150,287.20 pesos, a rise of 7,358.22 pesos over five years, representing a 5.14% increase. While this increase may seem minimal, it contrasts sharply with the state’s economic performance, which has not seen any growth since she took office.
According to the Quarterly Indicator of State Economic Activity from Inegi, Campeche’s economy fell by 4.1% in 2021 and the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) decreased by 3.8% in real terms in 2022 compared to the previous year. In the second quarter of 2024 alone (April-June), Campeche ranked second to last in the country in terms of economic activity, with a 7.3% decrease due to declines in primary and secondary activities by 7.7% and 9.1%, respectively.
In summary, while Campeche’s economy continues to struggle, Layda Sansores’ salary continues to rise, regardless of the state’s financial challenges.
