Yahayra Centeno Ceballos, head of the Municipal Women’s Institute of the Mérida City Council, reported a significant increase in calls from women seeking help or advice related to domestic violence. Every month, the institute receives around 200 calls, a stark contrast to previous years when such calls were practically nonexistent.
Focus on Support and New Strategies
Centeno Ceballos emphasized that the current administration is dedicated to providing support to women, ensuring they have an ally in their fight against violence. The commitment to implementing effective strategies has significantly increased access to support services for those facing domestic violence.
Campaign and Expanded Services
As part of the “In Mérida You Have an Ally” campaign and the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence, the City Council has expanded its services across the municipality’s 47 police stations. Key actions include:
– Expanded Legal Advice: Women in situations of violence now have access to legal support until 6 PM, addressing their needs with an extended schedule.
– Reinforced Shelters: The capacity of shelters for women without support networks has increased from housing six family units to ten, ensuring comprehensive and personalized protection.
– Women’s Line 24/7: This service operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, providing immediate attention. Due to high demand, efforts are underway to expand staff to maintain its effectiveness.
The current administration is characterized by offering comprehensive support to women, accompanying them through legal and emotional processes, and generating trust and real backing. Educational, cultural, and sports activities are promoted in schools and communities to make violence visible and prevent it from early stages, such as dating.
Collaboration with Companies
The City Council also collaborates with companies to promote safe and violence-free workspaces, strengthening the campaign through a network of alliances.
Model for Gender Violence Prevention
With these initiatives, Mérida is positioned as a model for attention and prevention of gender violence. Centeno Ceballos highlighted that with will and adequate strategies, it is possible to build a safer and more equitable city for women. The positive response from the women of Mérida is a testament to the success of these efforts.
