In response to a viral video showing taxi drivers assaulting tourists in Playa del Carmen, allegedly for using a platform transportation service, the State Attorney General’s Office conducted a search of the Lázaro Cárdenas del Río taxi drivers’ union facilities. The operation took place on the night of November 28, around 9:00 p.m., with the participation of various state security forces.
Luis Herrera Quiam, leader of the union, explained that the search focused on locating two vehicles allegedly involved in the assault. Since the video went viral, the union activated an internal protocol to locate and immobilize the taxis involved, removing the operators’ documentation and keeping the vehicles in the union’s yards.
“We were cooperative with the authorities from the very beginning,” said Herrera. He noted that the union has an internal protocol for dealing with such situations, immobilizing suspicious vehicles and initiating an internal investigation. When the media began broadcasting the video, the union acted quickly to contain the situation.
Investigation and Cooperation
The search concluded with the removal of the vehicles involved by the Prosecutor’s Office, without major incidents. Herrera emphasized that the union conducts its own internal investigations in response to complaints, such as overcharging or disrespecting users. “It is a dynamic union, and we do our job,” he said.
The Prosecutor’s Office and the union continue to cooperate in the investigation to clarify the facts and determine responsibilities.
