Migrants in Oaxaca declare hunger strike

Determined to continue moving towards the center of the country, at least a thousand migrants left the Oaxacan municipality of San Pedro Tapanatepec on foot at three o’clock this morning and arrived eight hours later in Santo Domingo Zanatepec, to the surprise of not being allowed to rest on a communal property that had housed previous caravans.

Amidst the confusion and annoyance, the migrants walked a few meters ahead and, faced with the impossibility of entering the town, they opted to lie down next to a small vehicular bridge, where personnel from the humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF) set up a mobile clinic and attended to women and children, mainly.

A few minutes later, immigration agents arrived at the same site, who informed the migrants that the trucking company ADO will make available to those who have the FMM document, for 20 days of free transit, to travel to Mexico City, paying a ticket of 1,200 pesos per person.

After rejecting the trucking company’s offer, shouting “trucks for everyone” and expressing their fears of being kidnapped on the way to the country’s capital, some migrants announced, with green and yellow posters in their hands, that they were going on a hunger strike, along with their children, until the Mexican government provides them with transportation.

Desperate, the migrants threatened to sew their lips shut in protest of what they consider to be “disdain” from the Mexican authorities, who they accused of giving in to Donald Trump’s threats.

“We want to get to the northern border. We don’t want to cause problems for the Mexican people,” they said when asked by this media outlet.

After resting and being treated by MSF, the migrants could only look around and wonder why they were prevented from using the communal land in Zanatepec, which previous caravans used to rest after the long walks they have been undertaking. Some voices stated that there was no coordination between federal and state officials.

Meanwhile, in Escuintla, Chiapas, the migrants who left Tapachula on foot a few days ago are resting and are expected to arrive in Mapastepec tomorrow, Thursday. Behind that caravan, others are being organized with the aim of reaching the United States before January 20, when Trump assumes the presidency.
