Parceros Café is set to bring the vibrant Colombian celebration of the Day of the Candles to Mérida on December 7 and 8. The event will take place outside the restaurant in the Historic Center.
A Heartfelt Tradition
Andrés Pinzón, a businessman and cultural promoter, explained that the Day of the Candles is considered the heart of the December season in Colombia. On December 7, people across the country gather to socialize and celebrate the beginning of the festive season with family and friends. However, for Colombians living abroad, this community-centric holiday can be bittersweet, as it is challenging to replicate the experience away from home.
Bringing the Celebration to Mérida
To bridge this gap, Parceros Café will host the first Day of the Candles celebration in Mérida. The event aims to unite the local Colombian community and introduce Mérida residents to this cherished tradition. The celebration will feature traditional candles and desserts, creating an atmosphere of Colombian spirit and hope.
Originally a religious celebration in honor of the Virgin Mary, the Day of the Candles has evolved into a day for Colombians to celebrate hope and family traditions. Children enjoy spending time with relatives and neighbors, while adults use the occasion to reconnect, especially those who travel home for the holidays.
Creating a Joyful Atmosphere
Pinzón shared that the memory of this celebration is a joyful one, with streets filled with food exchanges, decorated facades, and a festive atmosphere. The event in Mérida will replicate this experience by opening a space for attendees to light candles and enjoy the traditional celebration.
