100 years of tradition, La Alborada lights up San Miguel de Allende

At 3:30 in the morning on Sunday, December 8, the cannon was detonated, marking the beginning of the gunpowder drive and the start of the party. After burning a castle outside the Aurora factory, the caravan set off to the sound of the brass band heading to the nuns’ temple.

The streets shone in San Miguel

Almost a hundred stars and a dozen mojigangas walked through the main streets of the historic center to arrive at 5 in the morning at the temple of the Immaculate Conception, where they were awaited with a ringing of bells to sing the morning songs to the Virgin and begin the burning of gunpowder.

This is how the alborada began, which commemorates 100 years since the beginning of this tradition, which was brought to San Miguel de Allende on January 8, 1924 by workers from the municipality of Salvatierra and the neighboring state of Querétaro who came to the city to work at the La Aurora factory.

The gunpowder burning culminated with the burning of a castle in front of the temple. The celebration continued during the day with a popular festival and music in the church atrium.
