American Airlines has launched direct flights between Cozumel and Chicago, operating weekly from December 2024 to March 2025. This new route aims to boost tourism during the high season.
Elías Farah Ceh, deputy director of tourism, highlighted that this initiative is part of efforts to increase overnight tourism. The first flight from Chicago brought 168 passengers to Cozumel on a Boeing 737, with flights scheduled to be fully booked through March.
With similar figures to 2023, when over 19,000 tourists from Chicago visited, this new route is expected to strengthen the tourism industry, particularly in the overnight segment. The occupancy rate could rise above 70% in December and continue to increase in the following weeks.
Farah Ceh emphasized that Cozumel’s natural attractions and warm climate make it a preferred destination for tourists from the northern continent, especially during the winter season.
In addition to the Chicago route, other direct flights from Montreal, Toronto, and Dallas, as well as increased operations from Mexico City, are expected to contribute to a successful tourist season on the island.
