After a six-year pause, Tulum is reactivating its breathalyzer program to reduce alcohol-related accidents in the city. The operation will be managed by the Traffic, Health, and Civil Protection Departments and will be implemented during the winter season, particularly in December when alcohol consumption tends to increase.
Location and Fines
The breathalyzer checkpoints will be set up on the Tulum-Cobá highway, a route heavily traveled by both locals and tourists. While specific times have not been announced, it is expected that the checkpoints will operate during the evening and early morning hours when alcohol consumption is more common.
Fines
According to the Traffic Regulations of the State of Quintana Roo, fines for driving under the influence range from 15 to 25 UMA, equivalent to 1,628.7 to 2,714.25 pesos.
