In November, the municipality of Manzanillo positioned itself as the city of Colima as the district with the highest conditions of violence in the state.
Since January 2022, when a security crisis broke out due to the separation of the Colima Cartel or “Los Mezcales” from the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG), the capital had concentrated the highest number of homicides.
In annual terms, in 2022, of the 887 intentional homicides, the majority occurred in Colima capital, with 336, followed by Villa de Álvarez, with 245, and Manzanillo with 172.
This trend continued in 2023, when 303 victims of the 913 murders were recorded in the state capital.
In Manzanillo, where homicides increased, it was the second most violent district, with 250 victims; followed by Villa de Álvarez, with 156.
This year, as of November, data obtained by MILENIO through a request for information, show that Manzanillo is in first place in intentional homicides, accumulating 266 victims this year, against 265 in Colima, out of a total of 791 murders in state territory.
The violence does not stop
This weekend, the deputy director of the Social Reinsertion Center (Cereso) of Manzanillo, Salvador Zaragoza Álvarez, was murdered.
The crime occurred on Sunday night in Valle de las Garzas, a neighborhood of Manzanillo.
State security authorities have explained that, in addition to the local cartel and the CJNG, there is a significant presence of the Sinaloa Cartel, especially in the port of Manzanillo.
In fact, it was reported that this criminal organization tried to test the fentanyl market in Manzanillo.
Last week, this news outlet published an intelligence report indicating that in the port area of Manzanillo, criminal groups extract illicit cargo, including chemical precursors, but also threaten customs personnel, extort officials and block access to the port.
From October to date, the Semar has managed to seize 8,464 fentanyl pills, with an estimated value of 12 million pesos, where 3.2 tons of cocaine were confiscated, located in packages marked floating in the sea.
