On the 65th anniversary of the Diocese of Tlaxcala, more than 20 thousand parishioners from Tlaxcala participated in the annual pilgrimage to the Basilica of Guadalupe; their journey to the capital of the country was made on foot and by bus. Nearly two thousand Catholics from Zacatelco participated in this block, in an act of faith, devotion and love towards the Virgin of Guadalupe.

ANNUAL TRADITION

This tradition is nurtured year after year as a sign of gratitude to the patron saint of Mexico, for interceding in health, economy and family unity. In their journey there is sacrifice, pain and effort as they travel more than 150 kilometers.

Different groups joined together to travel from the Heart of the South to Mexico City, doing so with relays on the federal highway through San Martín Texmelucan, Río Frío and Chalco.

The parish priest Sergio Pérez Hernández was one of the 120 priests of the Diocese of Tlaxcala, from the 86 parishes of the entity, who participated in this religious tradition.

The representative of the church of Zacatelco commented that many parishioners organized themselves to go to the Basilica with mayordomías and on their own, organized in more than 40 buses, in a motivating year for the celebration of the 65 years of the Diocese of Tlaxcala.

“Many made the trip on foot, they walked the same day, November 8, they were catching up, we held a farewell mass attended by relatives,” reported Pérez Hernández.

The parish priest highlighted the good organization of the mayordomías of the Virgin of Guadalupe, “all the sections left by bus, this Monday they arrived at the Basilica, they carried the image of Saint Agnes virgin and martyr.”

10- to 12-HOUR WALKS

The priest added that the walk to Mexico City was done in breaks of 10 to 12 hours. “The families arrived early on Monday, between eight and nine in the morning.”

TWO ROUTES

The Diocese of Tlaxcala drew up two routes: the one in the Apizaco-Calpulalpan area that went through Texcoco and the one in the south, Chiautempan-Zacatelco, that went through Texmelucan, Río Frío and Chalco.
