Motorcycle Taxi Driver Arrested for Attempted Kidnapping in Playa del Carmen

A grandmother and her six-year-old granddaughter experienced a terrifying ordeal on the night of Monday, December 9, when a motorcycle taxi driver attempted to kidnap the child in the Villas del Sol subdivision of Playa del Carmen.

The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. when the grandmother, Virginia Tecillo, hailed a motorcycle taxi to return home with her granddaughter. The driver, identified as Roselio “N”, 36, from Chiapas, started the vehicle with the child on board before the grandmother could get on.

Virginia’s desperate screams for help alerted neighbors. One neighbor, driving a white van, intercepted the motorcycle taxi at the end of Alondras Avenue, blocking its path and allowing the neighbors to rescue the child.

Members of the Municipal Citizen Security Secretariat of Solidaridad responded to an emergency call to 911. They arrested Roselio “N” and transferred him to the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) for further processing. The Specialized Group for Attention to Family and Gender Violence (GEAVIG) provided psychological care and legal advice to the minor and her family.

Virginia recounted the distressing moments to local media: “I stopped him to get on, but as soon as the girl got on, he started up and took her. I started yelling at the neighbors: ‘He’s taking my girl!’ That’s when a neighbor chased him until he stopped him.” She added that her granddaughter considered jumping out of the moving vehicle but refrained due to the high speed.

Virginia also revealed that multiple disappearances of children have been reported in the Villas del Sol subdivision. She urged authorities to ensure that the detainee is not released, emphasizing, “Don’t let him out! If he did it once, he can do it again.”

The minor’s family has filed a formal complaint with the FGE for illegal deprivation of liberty and abduction of minors. The case has alarmed Playa del Carmen residents, who demand greater surveillance and regulation of the motorcycle taxi service, which has been problematic due to a lack of regulation.

Authorities are expected to take measures to clarify the facts and determine responsibilities. Meanwhile, Roselio “N” remains detained at the disposal of the State Attorney General’s Office.
