The Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport in Tulum received its first direct flight from Europe on Thursday, December 12. The route, operated by Discover Airlines, connects Tulum with Frankfurt (FRA), Germany.
The inaugural flight was carried out on an Airbus A330-300 with capacity for 283 and 302 passengers, divided into business, premium economy and economy classes. The aircraft landed at 4:00 p.m. with 199 passengers on board after a 10-hour trip. The route will have two weekly frequencies, on Thursdays and Sundays, and will be operational until April 2025.
The governor of Quintana Roo, Mara Lezama, and the German ambassador to Mexico, Clemens von Goetze, participated in the reception ceremony. Both highlighted the importance of this new link for the promotion of tourism in Tulum and the strengthening of cultural and commercial relations between both countries. “The arrival of this flight strengthens the ties between the German and Mexican people, and opens a new era of opportunities for the Mexican Caribbean,” said Lezama during his speech. For his part, the German ambassador highlighted: “This flight not only connects two destinations, but acts as a cultural and economic bridge between our nations.”
Discover Airlines, the leisure airline of the Lufthansa Group, already operates regular flights to Cancun, where it connects with Frankfurt up to six times a week during peak seasons. Now, with the addition of Tulum as its second destination in Mexico, it expands the connection options for European travelers. In addition, being part of the Lufthansa Group, passengers can access other European destinations from Frankfurt.
Perspectives for Tulum and the region
Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport seeks to position itself as a new gateway to the Mexican Caribbean, attracting international airlines such as Delta, United, American Airlines and Copa Airlines, which have already announced routes from the United States, Canada, Central America and South America. With the arrival of Discover Airlines, a new era for direct connectivity with Europe has begun.
Growing air connectivity is also driving the development of hotel infrastructure in Tulum, with numerous projects underway to meet increasing tourist demand.
