Mérida Mayor Criticizes Budget Cuts as “Punishment Law”

Mérida Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada has expressed regret over the decision by Morena-led deputies in the Yucatán Congress to cut essential municipal resources. These cuts affect services such as pothole repair, public services, and social support.

Mayor Patrón Laviada criticized the decision as political and partisan, stating, “They chose to punish not only the city council but all the inhabitants of Mérida by cutting resources.” She warned that this “Punishment Law” would directly impact the quality of life and have significant financial consequences.

Financial Impact

The mayor explained that Mérida will have less income in real terms in 2025 compared to 2024. Additionally, federal contributions will be further reduced in 2026 due to lower revenue collection caused by this measure.

Despite these challenges, Mayor Patrón Laviada vowed to continue working closely with the people of Mérida. “You can count on me and all the public servants of the city council,” she said. “We will continue fighting for our city and demonstrating that, despite the obstacles, we will not allow this political decision to stop us.”

She concluded by affirming that Mérida will remain an example of strength and hard work.
