Playa del Carmen is preparing for a significant increase in sargassum in 2025, as satellite monitoring predicts a higher influx than in 2024. The city is equipping itself with machinery, containers, and industrial support to tackle the issue.
Strategic Preparations
Irving Rafael Lili Madrigal, director of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone of Solidaridad, announced plans to install machinery at strategic beach locations and place containers to expedite the collection and disposal of sargassum. The city is also collaborating with companies that process sargassum for industrial uses, including sand recovery after screening.
Environmental Impact Mitigation
The goal is to mitigate the environmental impact and use the generated waste to create new products. Lili Madrigal mentioned that there is sufficient staff, but more may be hired if necessary.
Government Collaboration
In late November, Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama met with Alicia Bárcena, Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), to discuss joint strategies for environmental restoration, land use planning, biodiversity, and wildlife conservation. They agreed to use cutting-edge technology to combat the sargassum problem and keep the beaches clean for as long as possible.
