“Sujo, Son of a Hitman,” directed by Fernanda Valadez and Astrid Rondero, is a Mexican film that is in the race for the Academy Awards, and is now playing at the Cineteca Nuevo León “Alejandra Rangel Hinojosa” of the CONARTE Arts Center.
Dedicated “to the orphans of this country in flames,” as the epilogue on the screen at the end of the feature film says, the film tells the story of Sujo, a boy from Tierra Caliente, Michoacán, and his future in a context of violence.
“Listening to the stories of the boys was the most important thing and we thought that this film had to be a love letter for them, to tell them that their life is important, that many people care about us and that there is much to do, but it is also a wake-up call for society that seems to be indolent,” Rondero has declared to the press in some of her interviews.
The duo of filmmakers have once again shown their greatness, after their 2020 success with “Sin señas particulares”.
In the synopsis of the film in theaters, it is said that the murder of a drug trafficker affects his son, little Sujo; some time later, this boy will have to face this reality again.
The plot of the film, which lasts 126 minutes, invites us to reflect on what society does for children who are victims of violence in Mexico and has caught the attention of the most important festivals in the world and has been selected to represent the country in the Goya Awards race in 2025.
