A traffic accident involving a couple of foreign tourists occurred on Tuesday morning in downtown Mérida, near La Plancha Park. The tourists were driving a Kia car, which they had apparently rented in Quintana Roo, and were exploring various places in the city.
The accident happened when the tourists were driving east on 51st Street. Upon reaching the intersection with 52nd Street, the driver failed to respect the stop sign and collided with a Spark car on the front left side. The impact caused both vehicles to be thrown onto the sidewalk, with the Spark crashing into the wall of a house. The young man driving the Spark reported minor injuries.
Eyewitness Account
“The tourist did not respect the stop sign. I tried to avoid him, but I couldn’t; he was already on top of me,” said the Spark driver. The tourists, who only speak English, chose not to comment on the accident.
Municipal police arrived at the scene to investigate the accident. They allowed the tourists to contact the car rental company to send an insurance adjuster, enabling the visitors to resolve the issue and continue their trip.
