Governor Mara Lezama has announced that the federal government’s fiscal incentives, which have been granted to Chetumal since 2020 to attract investment, will now be extended to Cozumel. These incentives include exemptions from VAT and ISR on the importation of certain types of merchandise.
Details of the Incentives
The exemptions will also apply to merchandise brought into Cozumel under the definitive import customs regime and sold in authorized locations, similar to the benefits in Chetumal. This initiative was announced during a meeting between Governor Lezama and President Claudia Sheinbaum on the first anniversary of the Mayan Train.
Economic Impact
In Chetumal, these incentives aim to revive the commercial boom experienced in the 80s and 90s when its free zone status allowed for low-cost imports sold without import charges and under a differentiated VAT rate. The same benefits are expected to boost Cozumel’s economy once the decree is published.
Development Projects
Chetumal has already established the Tianguis del Bienestar, featuring 14,000 square meters of commercial premises and 50,000 square meters of open spaces for various uses, including markets, outlet stores, international trade nodes, light manufacturing sites, hotels, offices, and coworking spaces. The Mayan Train’s mobility of goods is expected to enhance regional trade and stimulate the local economy.
