Texas Launches Billboard Campaign in Mexico and Central America to Deter Migrants

In a bold move to address the rising number of migrants caught illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced the launch of a billboard campaign in Mexico and Central America. The initiative aims to deter potential migrants by highlighting the harsh realities they may face if they attempt to cross into the United States.

The billboards, which will cost around $100,000, are set to display disturbing images and messages that convey the dangers of illegal immigration. One of the signs reads, “How much did you pay to have your daughter raped,” while another warns migrants that they will be arrested if they enter Texas illegally.

According to Abbott, the goal of this campaign is not only to discourage potential migrants from crossing but also to make them aware of the consequences of doing so. The governor believes that by informing migrants about the risks involved, they may change their minds and choose not to attempt to cross the border.

Abbott’s announcement comes as a response to the record-high number of migrants caught attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border since President Joe Biden took office in 2021. This development has been met with criticism from Republican leaders like Abbott, who have called for stricter border security measures.

The billboard campaign is part of Texas’ efforts to stem the flow of illegal immigration into the state. In November, Texas officials announced that they would be offering 1,400 acres (567 hectares) of land near the border to the incoming Trump administration for its mass deportation initiative.

While the effectiveness of this campaign remains to be seen, it is clear that Texas is committed to addressing the issue of illegal immigration and protecting its borders. The use of billboards as a deterrent may be a novel approach, but it highlights the complexity and sensitivity of this issue.
