Twelve Cuban rafters were detained by municipal and federal authorities after arriving at the beaches of Tulum, Quintana Roo, near the Panamera hotel. The group, consisting of 10 men and two women, had intended to reach the United States but were swept away by sea currents after a week-long journey.
According to initial police reports, the castaways departed from Boca de Galafre, Cuba, aiming for the United States. However, adverse weather conditions diverted them to the shores of Tulum.
The group arrived in a makeshift boat constructed from wood, zinc, and polyfoam. Upon landing in the hotel zone of Tulum, they were rescued and detained by local authorities.
Rescue Operation
The rescue was a collaborative effort by the Coordination Group for the Construction of Peace, led by the Secretariat of Citizen Security of Tulum, in coordination with the National Guard and the Secretariat of the Navy. The authorities provided the castaways with medical support and food before handing them over to immigration authorities.
