Shooting on Isla Mujeres Beach Leaves Vendor Injured

During high tourist season, a shooting occurred on Isla Mujeres beach in Cancun, Quintana Roo, leaving one vendor injured. The incident, presumed to be a direct attack, took place on Saturday, December 28, in broad daylight near the Grand Palladium Hotel.

According to the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), as of November 30, Quintana Roo recorded 1,366 homicides and 2,829 intentional injuries. Despite these figures, Quintana Roo is not among the five most dangerous states in Mexico.

The shooting on Isla Mujeres beach left a vendor injured in the left calf and right thigh. The news broke on Monday, December 30, when a video surfaced showing the injured vendor in the sea and armed individuals fleeing the scene. The video also captured the ensuing police mobilization and the panic among tourists, who hurriedly collected their belongings.

The Secretariat of Citizen Security of Quintana Roo confirmed that three individuals were detained in connection with the shooting. The incident prompted a significant police presence to prevent further escalation.

Recent Violence in Cancun

The shooting on Isla Mujeres beach is not an isolated incident. On the same day, a woman and her 10-year-old son were attacked in region 235 of Cancun, near the fish markets. The woman sustained multiple gunshot wounds, leading to another intense police mobilization.

These incidents highlight the ongoing violence in Cancun, even as the city remains a popular tourist destination.
