The presence of organized crime in border municipalities
On the southern border of Mexico, forced displacement and territorial control by criminal groups have increased in recent years. Organizations such as the Sinaloa Cartel (CDS), the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG) and local gangs compete for control of strategic routes used for drug, human or arms trafficking, which intensifies violence in these regions.

Municipalities such as Frontera Comalapa and Motozintla have witnessed armed confrontations, blockades and extortions, which has forced Hundreds of families have been forced to look for a new home to live in the neighboring country.

It has also paralyzed economic and educational activities. This has a direct impact on the conditions of poverty in one of the most marginalized regions of the country.

In this sense, the migratory flow to the United States has also been exploited by criminal organizations, by charging “quotas” to migrants and allowing the trafficking of minors. All of this has made the humanitarian and security crisis between Chiapas and Guatemala even more serious.
