The Agricultural Census of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), which was conducted between October 2021 and September 2022, discovered that 87.9 million hectares, 45.9% of the national territory, has an agricultural use or vocation, but currently it is artisanal work that is gaining ground over agriculture.

“Well, right now the communities, our native peoples are in harvest time, they are in work time and the work that stands out the most in the towns is the sale of crafts.” – Santos Rentería de la Cruz, traditional governor of the “El Roble” community, municipality of Del Nayar, Nayarit.

But what do the numbers say? The average age of artisan workers is around 43 years old, since it is the adults who have the greatest knowledge of artisan techniques, but they are also those who were dedicated to agriculture because they knew the planting technique, however now they leave the field to work in their workshop.

“It is where they can get a little more resources apart from what they have in the community to be able to survive.” – Santos Rentería de la Cruz, traditional governor of the “El Roble” community, municipality of Del Nayar, Nayarit.
