Oaxaca Records 7,263 Earthquakes in 2024, Begins 2025 with 13 More

Oaxaca experienced a total of 7,263 earthquakes between January 1 and December 31, 2024, making it the second most seismically active state in Mexico, following Baja California Sur, which recorded 7,551 events.

The National Seismological Service (SSN) reported 19 earthquakes in Oaxaca on the last day of the year, all with magnitudes below 5 degrees. The final earthquakes of 2024 occurred between 10:08 PM and 10:39 PM on December 31.

The penultimate tremor of the year was recorded 72 kilometers east of Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz in the Sierra Sur at 10:08 PM, with a magnitude of 3.8. Another tremor occurred at 10:36 PM, 42 kilometers southeast of La Crucecita in the Costa region, with a magnitude of 3.7. The last earthquake of 2024 was documented at 10:39 PM, 39 kilometers southeast of La Crucecita, with a magnitude of 4.1.

As of the afternoon of January 1, 2025, Oaxaca had already been the epicenter of 13 earthquakes. The most recent tremor was recorded at 4:48 PM, 46 kilometers southwest of Pinotepa Nacional, with a magnitude of 3.5. The first earthquake of the year occurred at 12:22 AM, 65 kilometers southwest of Río Grande in the Costa region, with a magnitude of 3.7.
