A cooler with the human remains of six people, belonging to five men and one woman, was found by members of the Guerreras Buscadoras de Cajeme, Sonora, collective in the town of Vallejo, located between the municipal capital of San Ignacio Río Muerto and Bahía de Lobos; it is believed that there could even be more findings of this type.
As a result of the violence that has plagued the country since the so-called “war on drugs,” which began during the Felipe Calderón administration, one of the biggest problems in Mexico lies in the discovery of clandestine graves in various regions.
According to Wendy Selene Pérez, a journalistic consultant for Article 19, the authorities have not provided concise information, which is why, she says, it remains extremely difficult to obtain precise and transparent data on clandestine graves.
What happened in Sonora?
After a day of searching, the Guerreras Buscadoras de Cajeme group located clandestine graves, among which was the cooler with the human remains of six people.
Through their social networks, the searchers announced that they will carry out other days in Ciudad Obregón, a place where it is expected that there would be more clandestine graves.
“We thank all our colleagues who today found strength from where there is none to rescue each of the remains of our located treasures,” they mentioned in a statement.
In addition, according to what they revealed, the search was protected by the National Guard and elements of the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) and the Criminal Investigation Ministerial Agency (AMIC).
It should be noted that, in addition to the bone remains, various items of clothing were also found; However, the identity of the people is still unknown, so the collaboration of the Attorney General’s Office (FGJ) has been requested to carry out the expert reports and DNA tests and deliver the bones to the relatives.
Official figures report that Sonora is the state where the most clandestine graves have been found, with a total of 750 between 2006 and 2023, according to Wendy Selene Pérez in an interview for MVS Noticias with Luis Cárdenas.
