The narco-musical “Emilia Perez,” directed by French filmmaker Jacques Audiard, is emerging as one of the favorites for the upcoming Golden Globes ceremony, which will be held tomorrow in Los Angeles, where it competes in the category of best comedy or musical film along with “Wicked,” “Anora,” “Challengers,” “The Substance” and “A Real Pain,” accumulating a total of 10 nominations.
The Independent Film Distributor Zima Entertainment reported that “Emilia Perez” was preselected 15 times at the BAFTAs, establishing the highest record in the history of these awards.
According to the official statement from the production, this feature film, which has a stellar cast that includes Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz and Edgar Ramirez, presents the odyssey of four extraordinary women in Mexico.
The plot follows Emilia (Karla Sofía Gascón), who seeks the help of Rita (Saldaña), an underrated lawyer, to fake her death and be able to live as the woman she always dreamed of being.
According to sources from the Mérida Unreleased Film Festival, the film won the Audience Award for Best Film in the Official Competition Section, where it also received a Special Mention from the Young Jury.

The production has not been free of controversy. Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez criticized Selena Gomez’s performance, who responded via Instagram:
I understand your point of view… I’m sorry I couldn’t give more, I did the best I could with the time they gave me. This doesn’t take away from the work and heart I put into this film.
The production’s statement describes the film as “bold and delirious,” and highlights that it represents the latest work by acclaimed director Jacques Audiard, known for films such as “Metal y hueso” and “Un profeta,” and winner of two awards at the Cannes Film Festival.
After its successful tour of festivals and its accumulation of nominations, the Independent Film Distributor Zima Entertainment has announced that “Emilia Pérez” will arrive in Mexican movie theaters on January 23, 2025.
