FIFA rules out Monterrey as host city for 2026 World Cup draw

Although it was selected as the venue for the 2026 World Cup that Mexico will share with the United States and Canada, the city of Monterrey was ruled out as the venue for the draw for the Group Stage.

According to Alejandro Hütt, host city manager of Monterrey, FIFA’s decision was a media and commercial strategy.

They are not going to give us the venue for the draw. Obviously, when we received that confirmation in writing, it clearly hurt us,” he said.

Hütt Valenzuela added that despite the decision “we cannot even cry or complain,” so the creation of a delegate committee and working groups to compete to host the World Football Summit next June is already being planned.

It is the most important event in the football industry in the world, it is organized by Spaniards,” he said.

FIFA ruled out Monterrey as the venue for the draw, as did Vancouver, so it is expected that an American city that is not a World Cup venue will be chosen.

Mexico will have Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey as venues for the 2026 World Cup.
