Frauds in Baja California Sur: La Paz and Los Cabos with the greatest focus

The crime of fraud in Baja California Sur has shown a significant decrease, according to data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System. Although the figures are encouraging, new threats and forms of fraud arise, putting citizens at risk.

Between January and November 2024, 1,587 investigation files were registered, compared to 3,371 in the same period in 2023. This decrease of 52.9% is a notable advance, but not without concerns, since the incidence remains considerable, particularly in the municipalities in the south of the state.

La Paz tops the list with the highest number of complaints, accumulating 798 cases, followed by Los Cabos with 656. In contrast, the municipalities in the north, such as Comondú (70), Mulegé (50) and Loreto (13), present significantly lower figures, suggesting a concentration of cases in areas with greater economic activity and population.

Regarding this issue, the Baja California Sur State Cyber Police has issued an alert about a new type of scam known as “quishing” or “QR phishing.” Although no cases of this type have been detected in the state so far, authorities urge extreme caution.

Quishing consists of the use of malicious QR codes that redirect victims to fraudulent websites or induce them to download harmful content. These attacks seek to obtain sensitive information such as passwords, financial data or personal identification information, which could be used for identity theft and financial fraud.

The main recommendation to prevent this type of fraud is to be careful when scanning QR codes. It is important to verify the authenticity of the code and avoid those of dubious origin. In addition, keeping devices updated and protected with security solutions is also essential to minimize risks.
